ROJA: Also directed by Mani Ratnam, Roja’s biggest contribution in Roja is that it gave to Hindi films a non-acting superstar: a young boy whom Ratnam showed his faith in who composed the film’s music. His name is A R Rahman. Starring Arvind Swamy and Madhu, Roja is the story of a cryptologist who is kidnapped by the terrorists who will release him only if one of their own is. What happens thereafter is the crux of the story. Brilliantly made, this one stole a march over Bombay, another Ratnam film with the same theme that followed.
