Kishori Amonkar: Ace classical vocalist who never talked 'Music' to strangers
Kishori Amonkar left us on Monday Night in loneliness after a brief illness but she followed her everyday routine of Riyaz and teaching even her last day too. I never have had an opportunity to meet Kishori Amonkar in person but for the past one year her voice echoes the walls of my home during morning hours. The 97 minutes Vishnu Sahasranam Bhajan in two volumes have the power to open the inner self of yours striking a fine balance among body, soul and the mind. In her singing career spanning seven decades, she was revered as ‘Gaan-Saraswati’. Belonging to the Jaipur Gharana, she was conferred the Padma Vibhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award among many others.
Amonkar stayed in a small apartment in Mumbai’s Prabhadevi. A widow, she is survived by two sons and grandchildren.(By: Harsh Ranjan)
