Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu has resigned from his post as the NDA has chosen the senior BJP leader as its candidate for the August 5 Vice Presidential election.
The announcement was made by BJP President Amit Shah after a 90-minute meeting of the BJP's Central Parliamentary Board. The meeting, which was chaired by Shah, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top leaders.
"Venkaiah is a senior political leader across party lines and is a senior leader of the BJP which he had been associated from his youth. He is the unanimous choice of the BJP and all the NDA constituents who have welcomed his candidature," Amit Shah told reporters.
Shah said several names were considered, and ultimately Naidu was the unanimous choice.
"I know @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu for years. Have always admired his hardwork & tenacity. A fitting candidate for the office of Vice President," Modi tweeted soon after Shah made the announcement."A farmer’s son, @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu brings years of experience in public life and is admired across the political spectrum," Modi wrote in a series of tweets.
If elected Vice President, Naidu will also be the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha where the BJP still lacks a majority.
The election for the post of India's Vice President will take place on August 5.
